Mineral Springs Center, Inc. was created in 1973 by a group of concerned parents and citizens. In the beginning we served pre-school children through adults. In later years children with developmental disabilities were served in the public school system. A few years later pre-school children were served by home early intervention programs.
Our local community has always supported our program. The Blue Ridge Kiwanis Club donated property, and a new building was built with federal grant money and local match money in 1978. Mineral Springs Center received a grant to remodel and add on to the facility in 2000. Again, local match money was raised for this project. We added a new workshop and the entire building was remodeled and updated.
Today Mineral Springs Center serves approximately 38 adults from Gilmer and Fannin Counties. The center continues to serve adults with developmental disabilities with facility activities; an in-house work activity program; an out-of-facility cleaning crew; supported employment for individuals working in community jobs; and community activities.
Mineral Springs Center staff work hard to include those we serve in local activities. They take our men and women out to eat, shopping, to the library, to visit nursing homes, and to many other places. The people at Mineral Springs Center are very active in community volunteer activities. Our staff has expanded our services to provide in-home companion-sitter and personal care.
Mineral Springs Center is primarily funded by the Medicaid Waiver Program. We also receive a small amount of state grant-in-aid funding.
